The Pelham bit offers leverage for increased control. It can be used with a single pair of reins and a bit converter, or with two pairs of reins for more precise and direct action.

Increased control: May be particularly useful during training or in situations where additional control is needed, such as show jumping or trail riding.

Leverage: The curb chain under the horse's chin creates a leverage effect that slightly amplifies the pressure applied to the bars of the mouth when the reins are engaged. This can be useful for riders who need a bit more "control" to get a response from their horse.

Horses that tend to bolt and are difficult to stop.
The Pelham can also be useful for some sensitive horses with which we wish to meter each bit action according to the situation.

Bit attachment: Place the Pelham bit in the horse's mouth, inserting each cheekpiece into the corners of the lips. Ensure the curb chain is facing downwards and the bit shanks are correctly aligned. Then, attach the reins to the loop of the bit shanks.

Curb chain adjustment: The Pelham bit's curb chain should be adjusted to fit comfortably under the horse's noseband, just below the mouth. It should not be too loose or too tight. Contrary to what one might imagine, a curb chain that is too loose will accentuate the leverage effect and make the bit very severe.

Rein adjustment: If you are using two pairs of reins, attach the first pair to the Pelham bit rings located near the shanks, and the second pair to the rings located near the curb chain. Ensure the reins are adjusted to a comfortable length for your hands and provide appropriate contact with your horse's mouth.

      Expert's Take:

This Pelham bit, while offering precise control of your horse, remains comfortable thanks to its flexible rubber, which allows for soft contact, and its tongue port, which reduces pressure on the tongue. The short shanks also allow for a milder action.

Please note that the Pelham bit can be severe if your hands are too harsh or imprecise. To use it, ensure you are capable of moderating your hand actions.

You can also add a rope converter to distribute the bit's action between the main ring and the lever.
