How to choose the right bit material for your horse?

When it comes to choosing a bit for your horse, you often think about the mouthpiece's shape or the desired action. However, a fundamental element comes into play: the material of the bit. It's what directly contacts the horse's mouth and influences its receptiveness, relaxation, chewing, and even its morale at work.

An unsuitable material can cause discomfort, lack of salivation, or even resistance to the bit. Conversely, a good choice of material can transform the hand-mouth relationship and significantly improve the quality of contact. Be aware that there isn't one universally ideal material, but rather an ideal material for each horse-rider pair.

To guide you in your choice, we review the main materials used in bit manufacturing: stainless steel, resin, copper, blue steel, rubber, leather, carbon… We help you understand their advantages, limitations, and for which type of horse each material is best suited.

Stainless Steel: The Robust and Neutral Ally

Stainless steel is one of the most commonly used materials for bits. Highly valued for its strength, neutrality, and longevity, it provides a reliable and accessible choice for many riders.

Advantages

  • Very resistant to wear and oxidation
  • Stable over time, does not deform
  • Does not alter the taste in the mouth
  • Easy to clean
  • More affordable price.

Disadvantages

  • Cold to the touch, especially in winter
  • Lack of "life" in the mouth: does not encourage chewing
  • Not appreciated by horses needing stimulation

🐎 Ideal for…

Experienced horses, accustomed to the bit and without specific problems of contact or relaxation. Stainless steel is ideal for riders seeking a stable, neutral, and durable bit.

Resin: Gentleness for Sensitive Mouths

Resin is a flexible synthetic material, often chosen for its gentleness. It is particularly suitable for sensitive or young horses, seeking comfort and needing to build confidence in the rider's hand.

Advantages

  • Flexible and pleasant texture
  • Encourages relaxation and chewing
  • Lightweight: less intrusive in the mouth
  • Neutral temperature

Disadvantages

  • More fragile if bitten; will quickly show marks if the horse chews too much.
  • Shorter lifespan than metal
  • Slightly less precision in aid transmission

🐎 Ideal for…

Young horses during breaking, or horses with injured or particularly delicate mouths. An excellent choice for establishing a trusting relationship without irritating the mouth.

Copper and its alloys

Copper, alone or alloyed with other metals like Cyprium, stimulates salivation due to its particular taste. It is ideal for horses with dry mouths and stiff jaws.

Advantages

  • Stimulates salivation
  • Encourages relaxation
  • Taste appreciated by many horses
  • Often hypoallergenic and more resistant alloys

Disadvantages

  • Visible oxidation over time
  • Less durable than pure stainless steel
  • Can slip in the mouth with excessive saliva
  • Some horses may not like the taste or salivate too much.

🐎 Ideal for…

Horses with dry, stiff mouths or those that chew little. Copper can enliven the contact and improve the connection between the rider's hand and the horse's mouth.

Blue Steel (Sweet Iron): A Stimulating Taste for a Softer, More Responsive Mouth.

Blue steel, or sweet iron, is an intentionally oxidizable steel. Its special feature? It releases a slightly sweet taste as it oxidizes, which makes it very appealing to many horses.

Advantages

  • Sweet taste that stimulates chewing
  • Promotes salivation and relaxation
  • Adds "movement" to the mouth

Disadvantages

  • Visible oxidation (blue turning to rusty-gray)
  • Requires drying after each use
  • Not suitable for all horses who may not like the taste or salivate too much.

🐎 Ideal for…

Horses that are cold in contact, unresponsive, or a bit hard in the mouth. Blue steel helps to make the mouth more mobile.

Rubber: Softness and Suppleness

Rubber often encases a metal bit to create a very soft mouthpiece, ideal for sensitive or anxious horses.

Advantages

  • Very soft and supple
  • Reduces risk of injury
  • Pleasant temperature

Disadvantages

  • Bulky: can be cumbersome in some mouths
  • May encourage some horses to lean
  • Less precision in aids

🐎 Ideal for…

Anxious horses, in re-education or very sensitive. Rubber provides a sense of security but requires a soft and steady hand. It is often used as a straight bit for young horses during breaking.

Leather: The Natural Mouthpiece Par Excellence

Leather, a natural and flexible material, is very well accepted by horses that reject metal bits. However, it requires good maintenance.

Advantages

  • Very well accepted by horses resistant to metals
  • Neutral and reassuring taste
  • Naturally flexible and comfortable

Disadvantages

  • Demanding maintenance: regular drying and oiling
  • Less durable
  • Must be monitored to avoid cracks that can lead to breakage or injury to the horse.

🐎 Ideal for…

Very sensitive horses, refusing traditional bits. Also useful for gentle transitions or for re-educating a horse that has developed a distrust of the bit.

Carbon: The High-Precision Mouthpiece

Carbon or technical composite is lightweight and precise. It is suitable for well-trained horses, for fine and discreet work.

Advantages

  • Very lightweight and unobtrusive
  • Smooth, pleasant, and non-aggressive surface
  • Allows for great finesse in aids

Disadvantages

  • Less stimulating: no particular taste
  • Higher price
  • Less "lively" in the mouth

🐎 Ideal for…

Well-trained horses, ridden by experienced riders looking for a technical and discreet bit. Ideal for refining flatwork or gaining precision.

Conclusion: the right bit is the one your horse accepts

No material is universal. Just because a material is known to be "soft" does not mean it will necessarily suit your horse. Listening to his behavior, his level of relaxation, his ability to take contact without leaning, are valuable indicators.

If you feel that the horse:

-     -    pulls, locks up, fidgets or chews excessively,

-        - refuses to be ridden or "plays" too much with his bit…

… the material may not be the right one.
